Bio
Born in the Central Highlands town of Bullarto, Johnny Coghlan was a defender who emerged from the Gippsland ranks with Warragul before earning a trial with Melbourne in the VFL's second season. He made his senior debut in Round 9, 1898 against Carlton at Princes Park, brought in to shore up a backline that often found itself under siege during a difficult year for the club. Coghlan held his place in the side for five consecutive matches during a bleak mid-winter stretch where Melbourne failed to register a win, with his career concluding after a heavy loss to Geelong at Corio Oval. Unable to cement a long-term position in the pioneer-era lineup, he eventually returned to his native Bullarto, where he passed away prematurely at the age of 40.
