Recruited from Rutherglen in north-eastern Victoria, Johnny Dunn arrived at Victoria Park during a golden era for the club. He broke into the senior lineup early in the 1903 season, stringing together three consecutive appearances from Round 2, but found it difficult to cement a regular spot in a formidable squad destined for premiership glory that September. With the Magpies fielding a settled and star-studded 22 that would ultimately conquer Fitzroy in the Grand Final, Dunn was squeezed out of the side and unable to regain his place. His brief VFL tenure concluded without a goal, leaving him as a fringe contributor to one of Collingwood's most successful historic campaigns.
