Arriving at Punt Road as a promising key position prospect from South Gippsland powerhouse Fish Creek, Johnny Ryan managed a brief but memorable stint at VFL level late in the 1959 season. Capable of holding down centre half-forward or centre half-back, he spent the majority of the year developing in the seconds with 16 reserves matches, eventually breaking into the senior side for two games against Carlton and Collingwood. While his league career was fleeting, Ryan established a formidable legacy in country football, departing Richmond to star for Rupanyup before returning to Fish Creek where he became a club icon. A prodigious local talent, he eventually claimed the 1967 Standfield Medal as the Alberton Football League's best and fairest and was associated with an incredible nine premiership sides as a player and coach throughout his decorated regional career.
