Bio
Recruited from Bairnsdale, Jon Ballantyne was a tall key position prospect whose prolific scoring ability was often overshadowed by established spearhead Danny Del-Re at the Western Bulldogs. While he dominated at reserves level—topping the goalkicking table twice—and maintained an impressive strike rate of over two goals per game in the seniors, he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the forward line. He was thrown a lifeline by Collingwood in the 1993 Preseason Draft, where he was reinvented as a full-back and showed genuine promise in defence before a severe knee injury forced him into premature retirement. In a unique post-script to his football journey, Ballantyne later transitioned to American football as a punter, playing for the Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe and spending time on the Denver Broncos' roster.
