Bio
Recruited from East Fremantle with pick 36 in the 1996 National Draft, Jonathan Hay developed into one of the premier key defenders of the early 2000s. Renowned for his exceptional athleticism and closing speed, he became the cornerstone of the Hawthorn defence, capable of spoiling contests against the competition's most dangerous forwards. His career reached its zenith in 2001 when he earned All-Australian honours at full-back and played a pivotal role in the Hawks' charge to a preliminary final.
Following the 2005 season, Hay was the subject of a high-profile trade to North Melbourne, who gave up a first-round draft pick to secure his services in hopes of bolstering their backline. However, his time at Arden Street proved difficult as he struggled to recapture his best form while battling significant off-field personal issues. After managing just eight games for the Kangaroos in 2006 and failing to break into the senior side the following year, Hay retired midway through the 2007 season.
