Stats
Bio
A determined country recruit from Wangaratta, Jonathon McCormick arrived at Carlton via the unique Murray Kangaroos VFL pathway, a joint venture that offered second chances to regional talents. Selected with the first pick in the 2003 Rookie Draft, he was an archetypal Denis Pagan footballer: a tough, disciplined small defender and midfielder who relied on grit rather than flash. McCormick became an immediate fixture in the senior side during his debut season, playing 21 games as the Blues navigated a brutal rebuilding phase, impressing fans with his tackling pressure and work rate. However, he found himself squeezed out of the rotation the following year, and despite winning the Best and Fairest for VFL affiliate the Northern Bullants in 2004, he was delisted at season's end. He subsequently returned to the Ovens & Murray Football League, where he cemented a legacy as a local champion, winning the Morris Medal and captaining Wangaratta to premiership success.
