Teams

The son of Australian welterweight boxing champion Wayne Bannister, Jordan Bannister arrived at Essendon via the Calder Cannons but struggled to break into a powerhouse Bombers lineup fresh off their 2000 premiership. After managing limited opportunities over three seasons, he was delisted and thrown a lifeline by Carlton in the 2003 National Draft, where he reinvented himself as a disciplined, high-endurance run-with player. Standing 190cm with elite aerobic capacity, Bannister became a valuable defensive utility for the Blues, famously polling Brownlow votes for a complete shutdown role on Collingwood captain Nathan Buckley. Although he battled injuries and the pressures of a rebuilding list during his time at Princes Park, his legacy is defined by his unique post-playing career; Bannister became the trailblazer for the AFL’s player-to-umpire pathway, officiating nearly 100 senior matches and earning significant respect for his rapport with players before retiring from the field in 2017.
