Bio
Josh Walker entered the AFL system via the 2011 Rookie Draft, carrying a strong family connection to the Cats as the grandson of 1963 premiership player Peter Walker. He served a lengthy apprenticeship at Geelong, showing promise as a strong-marking forward and backup ruckman, but found it difficult to cement a permanent spot in a lineup dominated by Tom Hawkins. Seeking greater continuity, Walker was traded to the Brisbane Lions ahead of the 2016 season. During his stint in Queensland, he developed into a genuine swingman, plugging holes at both ends of the ground during a rebuilding phase for the club, though he was eventually squeezed out of the side as the Lions returned to finals contention.
After being delisted by Brisbane, Walker was thrown a lifeline by North Melbourne as a delisted free agent, where he arguably played the most consistent football of his career. By this stage, he had transitioned primarily into an intercepting key defender, using his contested marking strength and ability to read the flight of the ball to steady the Kangaroos' backline. A resilient journeyman who maximised his natural attributes through three different distinct eras, Walker was a reliable structural player until his final delisting at the conclusion of the 2022 season.
