Recruited from Tuggeranong in the ACT, Justin Blumfield was selected by Essendon with pick 62 in the 1994 National Draft. He developed into a vital structural component of the Bombers' powerhouse team of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Standing 187cm, Blumfield was a prototypically modern tall midfielder capable of dominating on a wing or drifting forward to utilise his strong overhead marking ability. His career highlight came during the dominant 2000 campaign, where he played a pivotal role in the premiership victory over Melbourne, gathering 18 disposals and kicking two goals on the big stage.

Despite his standing at Essendon, Blumfield became a high-profile casualty of the club's salary cap pressures following the 2002 season. In a difficult off-season that also saw teammates Blake Caracella and Chris Heffernan depart, he was traded to Richmond as the Bombers sought to balance their books. Unfortunately, his time at Punt Road was severely hampered by persistent soft-tissue injuries, restricting him to just 19 games over two seasons. He retired at the end of 2004, remembered primarily as a versatile key to the impeccable chemistry of the 2000 premiership side.
