Bio
Recruited from the Eastern Ranges with pick 27 in the 1995 National Draft, Kane Johnson wasted little time making his mark at the elite level. He became an integral component of the Adelaide Crows' golden era, playing in back-to-back premierships in 1997 and 1998 while still a teenager. During his time in South Australia, Johnson was renowned for his disciplined midfield work, often tasked with tagging the opposition's most dangerous playmakers while accumulating plenty of possession himself. After seven seasons and 104 games with the Crows, he requested a trade back to his native Victoria, eventually landing at Richmond ahead of the 2003 season in a deal that sent Jason Torney to Adelaide.
At Richmond, Johnson evolved from a defensive specialist into a prolific ball-winner and a central figure in the club's leadership group. His high standards and consistency saw him appointed captain in 2005, a role he held for four seasons during a challenging period for the club. His individual excellence was recognised in 2006 when he won the Jack Dyer Medal as the Tigers' best and fairest. Johnson stepped down from the captaincy following the 2008 season to mentor the next generation and retired midway through 2009 due to a persistent knee injury, finishing his career as a highly respected dual-premiership player.
