Bio
Recruited from Merbein in the Sunraysia district, Keith Smythe was a clever rover and forward pocket who arrived at Richmond during the height of the Tom Hafey powerhouse era. Standing at just 173cm, he was a dangerous option near goal but found it difficult to cement a permanent spot in a Tiger lineup that was stacked with legendary small men like Kevin Bartlett and Kevin Sheedy. After managing 15 games over three seasons at Punt Road—and finding himself squeezed out of the 1969 premiership side—Smythe crossed to St Kilda in 1971 in search of greater senior opportunities. He added a further 11 games with the Saints before retiring from VFL football at the young age of 22 to focus on his career in the clothing industry.
