Family

Recruited from the Chelsea Football Club, Kelvin Matthews arrived at Hawthorn with the inevitable pressure of being the younger brother of club legend Leigh Matthews. Despite the shadow cast by his sibling, Kelvin established himself as a formidable player in his own right—a heavily built, fearless centreman and half-forward who used his 94kg frame to bust through packs and intimidate opponents. His ability was quickly recognised with Victorian state selection in 1974, and he became a premiership player in 1976 after tasting defeat in the Grand Final the previous year. A dangerous option forward of centre, his talent was most evident during a 1977 clash against Fitzroy where he booted eight goals, famously outscoring his brother on the day.

Matthews' time at Glenferrie Oval ended abruptly during the 1978 season when, struggling to break back into the senior side after a knee injury, he was cleared to Geelong mid-year. The move provided him with a fresh start, and he became a solid contributor for the Cats, adding experienced aggression and goal-kicking power to their midfield rotation for another four seasons. While his career is often viewed through the lens of his famous lineage, Matthews carved out a successful decade-long tenure at the top level, defined by his physical presence and contested ball-winning ability.
