Bio
Recruited from Surrey Hills, Kelvin "Stainless" Steel was a defender who fought for opportunities in a powerhouse Hawthorn lineup during the mid-1970s. He managed 19 senior appearances over four seasons at Glenferrie Oval but struggled to break into a settled backline that was contending for premierships. Steel stepped away from VFL football entirely in 1978 to focus on his studies, missing the Hawks' flag that year, before returning to the top level with Essendon late in the 1979 season. While he only added six senior games to his tally at Windy Hill, he became a valued figure in the club's lower grades, captaining the reserves in 1980 and winning the seconds' Most Courageous Player award before transitioning into an off-field support role.
