Recruited from Rutherglen in the Ovens & Murray Football League, Ken Baker was a tall defender who arrived at Moorabbin just as St Kilda was assembling its most formidable lineup. Standing 188cm, he possessed the size to play key defensive posts and broke into the senior team for two games in 1965. His time at the top level is best remembered for his proximity to history; Baker played seven games during the club's celebrated 1966 premiership season, serving as a reliable defensive option during the home and away rounds. Despite his contributions during the year, he could not displace established stars like Bob Murray or Verdun Howell for the finals campaign and missed out on selection for the famous Grand Final victory over Collingwood. He departed the VFL at the end of 1966, holding the bittersweet distinction of being a contributor to the Saints' only premiership year without taking the field on the decisive day.
