Bio
Recruited from VFA club Preston, Ken Dineen arrived at the Lake Oval in 1939 to join his older brother Syd in the South Melbourne lineup. Standing 182cm, he was a versatile utility capable of holding down a key position at either centre half-back or centre half-forward, offering a strong aerial presence and the ability to hit the scoreboard. His VFL career was significantly interrupted by the Second World War, during which he served as a pilot in the RAAF. In a dramatic incident during his service, Dineen was shot down by Japanese fighters over Papua New Guinea and was notably rescued by local villagers and carriers. He returned to South Melbourne for the 1944 and 1945 seasons but struggled to recapture his pre-war continuity, eventually receiving a clearance to Camberwell midway through 1945.
