Recruited from Camperdown, Ken Hinkley began his VFL career with Fitzroy where he displayed immediate potential across two seasons. However, the pull of his country roots proved strong, and he secured a clearance to Geelong ahead of the 1989 season to be closer to home, a move that established him as a central figure in one of the club's most celebrated eras.

At Kardinia Park, Hinkley evolved into a classy rebounding defender known for his courage, elite reading of the play, and damaging disposal by foot. He became a crucial component of Malcolm Blight's high-scoring system, often launching offensive chains from the half-back line while retaining the ability to drift forward and hit the scoreboard. His individual excellence was peaked in 1992 when he won the Carji Greeves Medal as Geelong's best and fairest and earned All-Australian selection. A veteran of three Grand Final defeats, Hinkley retired following the 1995 season as a highly respected leader before eventually transitioning into a long-term coaching career.
