Rising through the ranks to make his senior debut as a teenager in 1968, Ken Montgomery developed into a cornerstone of North Melbourne's defence during the club's most successful era. A disciplined and uncompromising full-back, he was renowned for his close-checking style and ability to nullify the competition's most dangerous key forwards. With only two goals recorded across 13 seasons, Montgomery was the archetype of a stay-at-home defender, eschewing attacking flair to focus entirely on defensive accountability and structural discipline.

Montgomery's reliability made him an automatic selection under legendary coach Ron Barassi, playing a pivotal role in the Kangaroos' breakthrough 1975 premiership victory. He remained a key fixture in the backline during the celebrated 1977 campaign, featuring in both the drawn Grand Final and the replay triumph over Collingwood. While often flying under the radar compared to the more flamboyant stars of the 1970s, his consistency and longevity saw him retire in 1981 as a dual premiership player and a highly respected figure at Arden Street.
