Bio
A gifted all-round sportsman recruited from Camberwell Grammar, Ken Slater arrived at Hawthorn with a prodigious reputation in cricket, athletics, and tennis. Standing 188cm, he played primarily as a mobile half-forward, using his exceptional height and speed to impress observers during the war years. Despite showing the credentials of a class player and establishing himself as a regular in the 1944 side, Slater's football career was effectively cut short in 1945 on medical advice due to persistent injuries. He subsequently pivoted to elite tennis, famously competing in the singles draw at the 1946 Australian Championships where he reached the third round before being defeated by legendary champion John Bromwich.
