Bio
Recruited from Maryborough in the Ballarat Football League, Kevin Connell was a goal-kicking rover who became the unfortunate hard-luck story of Hawthorn's breakthrough 1961 premiership. After playing 14 games that season and booting a bag of five goals in the final home-and-away round, he tore his knee cartilage in the Second Semi-Final victory over Melbourne, forcing him to miss the historic Grand Final win against Footscray. In a strange twist of fate two years later, Connell was recalled for the 1963 finals campaign despite having played just one senior game for the entire year, eventually holding his spot for the Grand Final loss to Geelong. Persistent knee issues continued to plague his time at Glenferrie Oval, eventually forcing his retirement in 1964 with a better than a goal-a-game average but without the premiership medallion his 1961 form warranted.
