Recruited from the VAFA's Reservoir Old Boys, Kevin Grose became a cult hero at Collingwood in the mid-1970s, instantly recognizable for his long hair and extensive tattoos—a rarity for the era that earned him the nickname "Disney." A fearless half-back flanker who played with a "no-holds-barred" physical style, Grose was a standout performer during the Magpies' disastrous 1976 wooden spoon campaign, endearing himself to the faithful with his desperate tackling and strong overhead marking. However, the recruitment of hardened defenders like Stan Magro in 1977 saw Grose squeezed out of the senior lineup, restricting him to just five games as the club reached the Grand Final. He departed the VFL to captain-coach North Heidelberg in the Diamond Valley Football League, where he cemented his status as a local legend by leading the club to a premiership and topping the league goalkicking table in his debut season.
