Recruited from North Footscray, Kevin John Smith arrived at the Western Oval facing the difficult task of breaking into a lineup fresh off the club's 1954 premiership victory. He made his senior debut in Round 6, 1955, utilized primarily as a rover who could drift forward and hit the scoreboard. While he managed to play ten games in his debut season, competition for spots remained fierce in the mid-1950s Bulldogs side. Smith added another seven appearances the following year but was unable to cement a permanent position in the senior team, departing the VFL scene after the 1956 season.
