Bio
Kevin Sheehan was a crafty rover recruited from Sandhurst in the Bendigo league, famously spotted by Geelong recruiters while working in his family's bottle shop. Although he resided in Carlton's recruiting zone, he was unable to crack the Blues' powerful lineup and instead carved out a respectable career at Kardinia Park. Standing at 177cm, he was a goal-kicking small man who played with intelligence and consistency, reaching the 100-game milestone and booting 112 goals. His leadership qualities were evident early, as he captained the Geelong reserves to a premiership and was a key figure in a dominant seconds outfit that won three consecutive flags.
While a serviceable player, Sheehan's true legacy was established off the field where he became one of the most significant administrators in the game's history. Known universally as "Shifter," he transitioned into a development role that eventually saw him become the AFL's National Talent Manager. He was instrumental in professionalizing the draft, establishing the TAC Cup (now Coates Talent League), and overseeing the Auskick program. His decades of service to talent identification have made him the voice of the AFL Draft and seen the Kevin Sheehan Medal named in his honour for the best player at the Under-16 National Championships.
