A talented junior basketballer who transitioned late to Australian football, Tippett was recruited from Southport in Queensland by Adelaide with pick 32 in the 2006 National Draft. He quickly established himself as a key pillar in the Crows' forward line, utilising his imposing athletic frame and strong contested marking ability to become a focal point in attack while providing valuable support in the ruck. However, his departure from Adelaide at the end of 2012 sparked one of the era's most significant off-field controversies; a request to trade to the Sydney Swans led to an investigation that uncovered salary cap breaches by the Crows, resulting in heavy institutional sanctions and an 11-match suspension for the forward.

Once cleared to play for Sydney, Tippett formed a menacing, if intermittent, partnership with Lance Franklin, offering a dual-threat target that stretched opposition defences. He featured in the Swans' 2014 and 2016 Grand Final losses, showcasing his capacity to dominate games when his body allowed. Despite his high ceiling as a tall forward-ruck, his tenure in the harbour city was frequently marred by hamstring and ankle injuries. The toll of these persistent setbacks eventually forced him to announce his retirement in early 2018, ending a career defined by moments of brilliance and high-profile complexity.
