Recruited from South Adelaide, Kym Koster began his AFL career with Footscray after being selected in the 1993 National Draft. Although he showed promise as a hard-at-it midfielder at the Whitten Oval, his time in Victoria was brief, and he requested a trade back to his home state of South Australia following the 1995 season. This move to the Adelaide Crows proved to be the defining decision of his career, as he arrived at West Lakes just as the club was preparing for its most successful era.

A tough, industrious utility who could rotate through the midfield or play a defensive role in the forward line, Koster became a vital structural component under Malcolm Blight. He is best remembered for his integral part in Adelaide's back-to-back premierships in 1997 and 1998, where his disciplined work rate, tackling pressure, and ability to win contested ball allowed the team's stars to operate with freedom. He remained a consistent contributor until his departure at the end of the 2000 season, retiring as a dual premiership player who built a successful career on grit and determination rather than flair.
