Arriving at Greater Western Sydney as the number one selection in the 2012 national draft, Lachie Whitfield carried the immediate weight of expectation that accompanies the top pick. A product of the Dandenong Stingrays, he initially developed as a silky outside midfielder before finding his true niche as one of the competition's premier running defenders. Renowned for his elite aerobic capacity and sublime disposal on both feet, Whitfield serves as the Giants' primary distributor, using his run and carry to break open opposition zones and launch counter-attacks from the back half.

As a foundational pillar of the club, Whitfield has been integral to the Giants' evolution from expansion strugglers to perennial finalists. His consistency and class have been recognised with multiple Kevin Sheedy Medals and All-Australian selections, cementing his standing as one of the most decorated players in GWS history. While his career faced a significant hurdle in 2017 with a suspension regarding an off-field breach, he returned to the side to produce arguably the best football of his career. Now a senior leader, he remains the designated architect of the Giants' transition game and a crucial mentor for the club's younger running brigade.
