Standing at an imposing 193cm—a giant stature for the era—Lance Regnier was a key position prospect recruited from Sandringham in the VFA. He initially broke into the VFL with St Kilda midway through the 1939 season, utilising his significant height advantage to operate as a ruckman capable of drifting forward to hit the scoreboard. After crossing to Carlton for the 1941 season, his top-level career was effectively prematurely ended by his service as a Trooper in the Australian Army during World War II. Regnier attempted a post-war comeback with his original club Sandringham in 1947, but promptly retired after suffering a broken nose in a brutal encounter against Brunswick, leaving him as a notable "what-if" whose physical gifts were never fully realised at VFL level.
