Bio
Recruited from Ballarat East following a disputed clearance battle with Fitzroy, Laurie Icke established himself as a fearsome defender in a North Melbourne backline renowned for its uncompromising physicality during the early 1950s. Possessing a ruthless approach to the contest and a famous "mad stare," he was a tough-as-nails backman who notably missed the start of the 1955 season after being suspended for striking Melbourne star Ron Barassi in a semi-final. His career was headlined by a bizarre mid-season controversy in 1955 when the club committee summarily sacked him and teammate Mick Grambeau for allegedly not trying during a loss to St Kilda, only to reinstate them days later after the playing group threatened to strike and supporters protested the decision. Icke eventually departed the VFL to captain-coach Minyip, leaving a legacy at Arden Street that was later cemented by his son, Steven, who played in North's 1977 premiership team.
