Recruited from Subiaco as an inaugural member of the West Coast Eagles squad in 1987, Laurie Keene was a towering ruckman whose immense potential was ultimately curtailed by a fragile body. Standing 203cm, he offered a rare combination of size and athleticism that allowed him to dominate aerial contests and drift forward to impact the scoreboard, maintaining an average of better than a goal per game. His spectacular play was headlined by a towering grab over Fitzroy's Paul Roos at the MCG in his debut season, a highlight that remains part of early Eagles folklore. Despite establishing himself as a key pillar in the club's structure when fit, Keene battled persistent leg injuries throughout his tenure, restricting him to just 36 appearances over four seasons before chronic hamstring issues forced his premature retirement in 1990.
