Bio
Arriving at the Junction Oval in 1971 with a strong reputation as a premiership forward for West Perth, Laurie Richards proved to be an athletic and versatile acquisition for the Lions. Although he lacked the heavy frame of a traditional key position player, he compensated with spectacular high-marking ability and the endurance to push up the ground as a ruck-rover. His consistency was rewarded with a runner-up finish in the 1972 Best and Fairest and selection for Victoria the following season. Serving as vice-captain in his final year, Richards enjoyed a prolific 1974 campaign—hauling in 125 marks and polling eight Brownlow votes—before departing to continue a nomadic but successful career in the SANFL and WAFL.
