Bio
Selected by St Kilda with pick 37 in the renowned 2001 National Draft, Leigh Montagna evolved from a fringe small forward into one of the competition's premier running midfielders. While he took several seasons to cement his spot in the senior side, often deployed as a tagger or goal-sneak early in his tenure, he flourished under Ross Lyon to become a pivotal figure in the Saints' dominant 2009-2010 era. Forming a celebrated midfield unit with Lenny Hayes and Nick Dal Santo, Montagna was renowned for his elite endurance, line-breaking speed, and capacity to accumulate massive disposal numbers as an outside runner.
His consistent output was recognised with back-to-back All-Australian selections in 2009 and 2010, playing a crucial role in the club's three Grand Final appearances during that window. As the Saints entered a rebuilding phase and his pace naturally declined, Montagna successfully reinvented himself as a creative half-back flanker, utilising his precise field kicking to launch attacks from defence. He retired in 2017 as a loyal one-club player, finishing just shy of the 300-game milestone but leaving a legacy as one of St Kilda's most durable and accomplished contributors of the modern era.
