Bio

1 revision

Recruited from Albury after winning the Ovens & Murray Football League's Morris Medal at just 20 years of age, Leigh Newton was a mobile ruckman and forward taken by Melbourne with pick three in the 1997 Pre-Season Draft. Originally from the small Victorian town of Whitfield, the 198cm big man was acquired to provide support for veteran Jim Stynes and showed immediate potential, managing 13 games and six goals in his debut season. However, his on-field progress was derailed by persistent groin and shoulder issues that sidelined him for the entirety of the 1998 and 1999 campaigns. Despite being delisted without adding to his game tally, Newton maintained a strong connection with the Demons, transitioning into a long-serving off-field tenure that included roles as the club's Media Manager and ruck coach, before later joining Hawthorn's coaching panel in 2009.
