Bio
Recruited from Myrtleford in north-east Victoria, Len Ablett holds a unique place in history as the pioneer of the game's most celebrated family dynasty. Distinct from the mercurial high-flyers that would later define the Ablett name, Len was a rugged centre half-back and utility who relied on physical strength and reliability rather than polish. His five-season tenure at Punt Road was played against the backdrop of the Second World War, where he balanced senior football with service in the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. Ablett’s VFL career had a storybook conclusion; after fighting to hold his place in the side, he was named as the 19th man for the 1943 Grand Final against Essendon, retiring as a premiership player immediately after the victory to return to the bush where he became a legendary administrator in the Ovens and Murray League.
