Bio
A World War I veteran whose league career was delayed by his service with the 7th Field Artillery Brigade, Len Gale debuted for Fitzroy as a 23-year-old rover with a sharp eye for the goals. He cemented his legacy as a member of the 1922 Premiership side, starting in a forward pocket, but his 1923 campaign remains a story of missed opportunity; despite finishing second in the club's goalkicking, a heavy six-week suspension for attempting to strike St Kilda's Bill Cubbins cost him his spot in that year's Grand Final. Gale briefly left the VFL to captain-coach Horsham in 1924 but returned to Brunswick Street to aid the Roys' finals campaign that September, eventually departing permanently to lead Echuca in the country leagues.
