Bio
A decorated war hero whose bravery at Ypres earned him a Military Medal, Len Ludbrooke’s football career was a brief post-script to his service with the 13th Field Ambulance during World War I. Recruited from Ivanhoe, the diminutive forward made a late VFL debut at age 25 in the final round of the 1920 season. While he missed selection for that year's finals series, an impressive performance during the club’s post-season exhibition tour of Adelaide earned him a lifeline for the start of 1921. Ludbrooke showed a handy ability to find the goals, scoring in three of his four career matches, but ultimately struggled to break into a strong Collingwood side permanently. Following his brief stint at the top level, he returned to his family’s surgical instrument business, where he spent his working life manufacturing artificial limbs for fellow returned servicemen.
