Teams

Hailing from Briagolong in Victoria's Gippsland region, Len Maxwell was a mid-sized recruit who briefly featured for Hawthorn during the club's challenging formative years in the VFL. He arrived at Glenferrie Oval in 1927, just the third season of the club's existence in the major league, joining a squad that was struggling to find consistency and depth under the "Mayblooms" moniker. Maxwell broke into the senior lineup midway through the year, making his debut in Round 12 against St Kilda, but he found it difficult to hold his place in the side. He managed only three senior appearances without registering a goal before drifting out of the league, a typical trajectory for many country footballers of the era who returned to regional competition after a short trial in the city.
