Bio
Born in Port Augusta but educated at Geelong College, Len Strickland was a standout schoolboy athlete who captained the First XVIII and won the school's prestigious College Cup. He was called up to the Geelong senior side in 1900 for a brief five-game cameo while still completing his education, showcasing the leadership and athleticism that had defined his school years. His promising football career was cut short when he left Australia to serve in the Second Boer War, marking the beginning of a life dedicated to military service rather than sport. Strickland later re-enlisted for World War I, surviving wounds in Belgium with the Australian Army Medical Corps, and eventually settled permanently in South Africa. He rose to become a Colonel and the Director of Civil Internment Camps, living out his remaining years in Cape Town far from the Corio Oval.
