Bio
Recruited from Terang, Len "Barrow Boy" Toyne was a nomadic rover and forward whose VFL career was heavily impacted by World War II. After establishing himself at Geelong, he spent the 1942 season with Fitzroy when the Pivot went into wartime recess, subsequently missing two prime years serving with the AIF. Although he returned to Geelong in 1945 to place third in the best and fairest, Toyne left the league to captain-coach Sandringham in the VFA, leading the club to its breakthrough 1946 premiership. He returned to the VFL system three years later with Melbourne, spending a single season as a productive forward before continuing his coaching journey interstate with Sturt in South Australia and Launceston in Tasmania.
