Bio
Recruited from New South Wales with pick 11 in the 1998 National Draft, Lenny Hayes evolved from a lightly built teenager into the spiritual leader of the St Kilda Football Club. A quintessential contested ball-winner, he was renowned for his courage, tackling intensity, and a signature sidestep that created space in congested stoppages. Hayes became the engine of the Saints' formidable midfield during the Ross Lyon era, often sacrificing his own body to win clearances and drive the team forward. His resilience was highlighted by a successful return from a knee reconstruction in 2006 to recapture elite form.
Hayes' standing in the game was immortalised during the 2010 Grand Final draw against Collingwood, where he won the Norm Smith Medal for a tenacious performance on the biggest stage. A three-time All-Australian and three-time Trevor Barker Award winner, he served as club captain in 2004 and co-captain in 2007. Despite battling injuries late in his career, he remained a key contributor until his retirement in 2014, departing as a beloved one-club player who fell agonisingly short of the 300-game milestone but left an indelible mark on the club's culture.
