Bio
Leo Garlick arrived at St Kilda as a lightly built winger in 1959, quickly establishing himself in the senior side during a difficult transition period for the club. Recruited as a 20-year-old, he became a regular fixture in the Saints' lineup, playing 43 games over three seasons under coaches Jim Francis and Allan Jeans. A pacy wingman who played at just 74kg, Garlick is perhaps best remembered by football historians for a brutal incident at Junction Oval in 1961, where a heavy clash with Hawthorn star Brendan Edwards left him concussed and bloodied, forcing him from the field in what became a confronting image of the era's physicality. Despite showing promise as a consistent senior player, his VFL career concluded at the end of that 1961 season, just as the Saints were beginning their slow climb toward competitiveness in the 1960s.
