Bio
Recruited from Thomastown, Leo Hillis was a promising utility whose VFL career was heavily curtailed by the outbreak of World War II. He broke into the Footscray lineup as a teenager in 1939, but his development was immediately interrupted by his military obligations, restricting him to just five senior appearances spread across a six-year period. While he returned to the club for a final stint in 1944, Hillis found his true calling away from the football field, embarking on a distinguished career in the Royal Australian Navy. Beginning as a radio electrician, he eventually rose to the rank of Commander and served until 1970, leaving a legacy of leadership that far outstripped his brief tenure at the Kennel.
