Stats
Bio
Recruited from Terang in western Victoria, Leo Maguire became the anchor of Richmond's defence during the club's successful World War II era. Standing 188cm and weighing nearly 100kg—giant proportions for the 1940s—Maguire was a powerfully built centre half-back known throughout the league as "Hands" due to his massive mitts and vice-like marking ability. He combined this physical dominance with a booming left-foot kick, making him a formidable obstacle for opposing forwards who struggled to move him in one-on-one duels. A key pillar in the Tigers' 1943 premiership side and the 1944 Grand Final team, he was a consistent performer who rarely lowered his colours in a contest. After falling just short of the 100-game milestone, Maguire departed Punt Road in 1949 to pursue captain-coaching opportunities in country football with Kyneton.
