Bio
Recruited from VFA club Brunswick, Leo Maynes initially struggled to cement a regular senior spot at Fitzroy before a mid-season clearance to Essendon in 1937 revitalised his VFL career. While he often manned the back pocket, Maynes developed into a versatile utility at Windy Hill, noted by contemporaries as a determined trier and excellent clubman rather than a flashy superstar. His most consistent campaign came in 1938 when he finished equal-third in the club's Brownlow Medal count, though he later became a key leader in the reserves, winning back-to-back Best and Fairest awards and a premiership with the seconds. A unique athlete who famously held the distinction of being the League's ballroom dancing champion, his football journey was ultimately curtailed by military service during World War II.
