Bio
Recruited to the Lions in 1954, Leo Smyth was a diminutive wingman and rover who carved out a respectable five-season career at Brunswick Street. Standing just 169cm, he was a serviceable small man during a transitional era for the club, becoming a regular fixture in the senior side throughout the mid-1950s. While a consistent contributor in his own right, Smyth holds a unique place in Fitzroy folklore as the player whose misfortune opened the door for the club's greatest son; in Round 4, 1955, he was forced from the field with an injury against Geelong, allowing a teenage Kevin Murray to run on as the 20th man for his debut game. Smyth left the VFL scene following the 1958 season and sadly passed away in 1978 at the age of just 44.
