Bio
Recruited as a mature-age prospect from Swan Districts in the WAFL, Leon Baker arrived at Essendon at age 27 having already spearheaded consecutive premierships in the West. A poised and silky midfielder renowned for his balance, elusive blind turns, and ability to drift forward and hit the scoreboard, Baker made an immediate transition to the tempo of VFL football. He played a pivotal role in the Bombers' back-to-back premierships in 1984 and 1985, famously sparking the final-quarter comeback in the 1984 Grand Final against Hawthorn with two crucial goals. Although his VFL career spanned just five seasons, Baker's reputation as a big-game specialist and the final piece of Kevin Sheedy's premiership puzzle ensures his enduring legacy at Windy Hill.
