Stats
Bio
Recruited from Coragulac in the rich footballing district of Colac, Leon Goonan was a lightly framed utility who arrived at Fitzroy during the mid-1970s. Standing 180cm but weighing just 70kg, he lacked the physical bulk to consistently match it with the era's hardened defenders but possessed the natural instincts of a country footballer. He broke into Kevin Rose's senior side late in the 1976 season, making his debut in Round 16 against North Melbourne and holding his spot the following week against Hawthorn, where he booted his solitary career goal. Despite getting a brief taste of VFL action, Goonan was unable to cement a permanent place in the Lions' lineup and left the club after a single season, remaining one of the many country recruits who earned a guernsey but found the sustained intensity of League football a difficult bridge to cross.
