Bio
Recruited from Finley in the New South Wales Riverina, Leon Higgins joined the Sydney Swans via the club's zoning concessions in the late 1980s. A handy rover and forward pocket, Higgins possessed a sharp goal sense and the ability to extract the ball from stoppages, making him a consistent contributor during a difficult era for the Swans. He played his best football in the early 1990s, establishing himself as a regular fixture in the senior side despite the team's struggles near the bottom of the ladder.
After nine seasons and 115 games in Sydney, Higgins was delisted at the end of 1995 as the club looked to reshape its list ahead of their 1996 resurgence. He was offered a lifeline by Hawthorn, who selected him with pick 14 in the 1996 Pre-Season Draft. However, his time at Glenferrie Oval was brief, managing just seven senior appearances in a single season before his AFL career came to a close. While never a headline star, Higgins remained a serviceable utility player who carved out a respectable decade-long career at the top level.
