Bio
Recruited from Drouin in the Gippsland region under the 1970 zoning rules, Leon Rice wasted little time establishing himself in a powerful Hawthorn lineup. The skilled wingman and flanker broke into the senior side as a teenager, culminating in a premiership medallion in just his second season. Rice played a valuable role in the Hawks' 1971 Grand Final victory over St Kilda, part of a new generation of talent that kept the club competitive after the initial breakthrough era of the 1960s.
Rice remained a consistent fixture at Glenferrie Oval throughout the 1970s, serving as a reliable link player during the club's golden era. He experienced the heartbreak of the 1975 Grand Final loss to North Melbourne, where he started on a half-back flank, but tasted success again the following year. In the 1976 premiership triumph, Rice started on the bench as a reserve, earning his second flag as the Hawks exacted revenge on the Kangaroos. After 133 games in brown and gold, Rice was moved on prior to the 1980 season, eventually crossing to the VFA where he captain-coached Camberwell to a Division 2 premiership. He remains a Life Member of the Hawthorn Football Club.
