Recruited from VFA powerhouse Northcote, Les Ames was a medium-sized forward who earned two brief opportunities at the highest level during the 1930s. He made his debut for Collingwood as a teenager in 1931, showing immediate promise by snagging five goals in just three senior appearances before falling out of the side. After spending five seasons out of the League, Ames resurfaced at Fitzroy in 1936, where he again displayed a knack for hitting the scoreboard with another five goals in five games. Despite averaging better than a goal a game across his short career, he was unable to secure a permanent position at either club, ultimately remaining a fringe player who capitalised on his limited chances in front of the sticks.
