Bio
Les Carbarns was a defender whose top-level career was delayed by distinguished service in World War I, where he served in Gallipoli and the Middle East before finally making his VFL debut. A product of Scotch College who played for South Yarra in the Metropolitan League, he broke into the St Kilda side in 1920 as a 29-year-old mature-age recruit. After two seasons at the Junction Oval, Carbarns transferred to Hawthorn while they were still in the VFA, establishing himself as a key player in the years leading up to their admission to the league. He holds a significant place in history as a member of the Mayblooms' inaugural VFL team in 1925, providing veteran experience in the backline during the club's foundation year before retiring to become a respected journalist for The Sporting Globe.
