Bio
Recruited from the Leopold juniors on the recommendation of club champion Harry Lampe, Les Charge developed into a formidable structural pillar for South Melbourne during the years leading up to the Great War. While he initially bided his time on the fringe of selection, he eventually established himself as a powerful tap ruckman capable of drifting forward to hit the scoreboard, evidenced by a strong return of 50 career goals. A key component of the Bloods' engine room, he shouldered the first ruck duties in arguably the club's biggest games of the era, appearing in both the 1912 and 1914 Grand Final defeats. Charge exited the VFL at the peak of his powers; in his final season of 1915, he was voted the competition's best all-round footballer by the public in The Follower, cementing his status as a premier big man of his time.
